Council is seeking a passionate and detail-driven Museum Collections Officer to join our vibrant Gallery and Museum team. The suitably qualified applicant will fill the permanent full-time Museum Collection Officer role.
The Albert Kersten Mining & Minerals Museum, locally known as the GeoCentre, is repositioning itself for 21st Century service delivery. The Museum team plays a pivotal role in ensuring Council is a leading partner with our community to achieve our city’s vision of being a living museum and promotes its unique heritage listing.
We are seeking suitable applicants with strong collection care expertise to ensure the Broken Hill City Council’s GeoCentre collection is managed to the highest museum standards. The role is responsible for the preservation, documentation, cataloguing and ongoing stewardship of the collection in line with recognised museum best practices. Including preventative conservation, accurate collection recording and ethical collection management. The position will also support science communication by fostering public understanding of Broken Hill’s geological, mineralogical, mining, and metallurgical histories.
Reporting directly to the Gallery & Museum Manager, you will ensure the collections of the Albert Kersten Mining & Minerals Museum are easily accessible through best practice collection management. You will play a vital role in developing the procedures, protocols and workflows for collection management and contribute to the Museum’s ongoing planning.
This role is ideal for someone who loves working with heritage collections, cares deeply about preservation and enjoys sharing stories that connect people with place.
You will thrive in this role if you have:
- Experience working with museum, gallery or cultural collections
- Strong knowledge of preventative conservation and handling practices
- Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and record management expertise
- Ability to research, interpret and communicate historical content
- A collaborative and community-minded approach
- Familiarity with collection management software (e.g. Vernon, eHive, Mosaic, EMu)
